I have found the perfect breakfast. I made these last night with dried cherries, walnuts, chocolate chips, and cardamom instead of the cinnamon. I added a full stick of butter because I was lazy and didn't feel like cutting 2T off the end, and forgot to put in the almond butter. At some point I want to try using Nutella instead of regular nut butter. They are just little squares full of dense, rich, sweet, tart, chewy goodness. I had maybe a 2x2in square for breakfast and I feel like in a few days I'll be hungry again and want another one ;-) My stomach is probably being mislead by all the fiber, so I'm going to bring another small one for a midmorning snack, which I suspect I will actually want. Next time I make them, I'm going to reduce the sugar somewhat (I prefer less sweet granola bars) and try half-and-half butter and olive oil. They could be made vegan (though I suspect they'd be a bit crumbly unless you used margarine or coconut oil or something like that; I'll see how the olive oil goes) and gluten-free if you used gluten-free oats. With some effort, I could even make these entirely locally-sourced :-) I would have to make them all fruit, no nuts, though, since it seems to be impossible to get local nuts here. |

I am wearing my awesome raspberry-colored corduroy pants. When I bought them in November they were nicely form-fitting. Going by my last physical, I now weigh slightly more than I did then; I'm usually at my heaviest around this time of year. My pants, however, are annoyingly loose. I am confused. Perhaps if I eat the fudge in the freezer my pants will remember to conform to women's-magazine stereotypes and shrink? |

The first no smoking sign was plain paper attached with regular tape. Someone removed it. I made another one and put it in a more official-looking plastic sleeve and attached it with regular tape. Someone removed it. The current one is in a plastic sleeve and attached with copious quantities of packing tape. I'm...actually kind of enjoying my little vendetta against the doorway-smokers. |

angry librarian
Dear students, I know we don't stringently police smoking in front of the main doors, because they are double doors that provide at least marginal protection from smoke due to the "airlock" between the two sets of doors. It's still annoying and possibly life-threatening to people with allergies or asthma, but we have to pick our battles. However, the new doors are only one set of doors. If you stand in front of them and smoke, all the fumes go directly into the main computing area every time someone opens the door. No, moving two feet away will not help. This why the student handbook clearly forbids smoking less than 30 feet away from any building entrance. Sassing the librarian when she tells you to move is not a good idea. This will result in wrathful librarians. Wrathful librarians take all your books and mail them to Narnia. No love, Your Librarian |

three hundred cubits the length of the ark, fifty cubits its breadth, and thirty cubits its height
MASSFILC was lots of fun last night, despite the deluge. I made many afghan squares and recited the Fufumal. It is now very wet. We have closed off two floors, a computer cluster, and one elevator due to the risk of electrocution or sodden ceiling tiles falling on someone's head. The basement at home has standing water in it, but the lower floor of the library is by some miracle not actually flooded, just leaking. By some other miracle, the only leaks near any stacks are the ones by the videos, which are at least in water-resistant cases. Still, I am this close to putting "gopher wood" on the little clipboard where we write supplies for our admin person to order. |

Sunday Reading
It being Sunday, I am combining my daily routine of writing with the frenzied hunted air of a hamster taped to a laptop with thinking thinky thoughts about books. Spinning off of same, here is a guest blog on Books Sarah Rees Brennan Would Like to See As Movies. In which I mainly complain about movies I do not like, because that is the way I roll. But really - who adds an evil twin in a snowglobe? It is never a good idea. Karen Healey, whose excellent book Guardian of the Dead I will be reviewing shortly, along with several other very fine books just as soon as I have finished writing my own book (Can't sleep! Deadline will get me!) has a very interesting post on YA Fantasy: Full of Miscreants. Which sprang from a conversation we had in which she blackened one of my characters' names and I defended said character valiantly. It occurred to me only after reading her blog post that she mostly discusses the Bad Boy Heroes of young adult fantasy, whereas the guy she discusses for my book is the (comparatively) good guy sidekick. So not only is my bad boy a little too bad for the tastes of some, but so's my nice guy. Oh, self. Get a commercial instinct someday. Put it on your shopping list along with ginger biscuits! I was also thinking about this less-recent post Justine Larbalestier wrote about, among other things, readers who only read one of an author's serieses...es and I was thinking about that also! I mean, I know it happens all the time, no matter how successful a writer is. A whoooooole lot of people read Stephenie Meyer's The Host, for instance. But about a zillionty more people read Twilight. And this of course makes sense: for one thing, some readers don't think about the writer - they are super into these specific characters, and wish to be with them! But some people seem to actively resent the other books an author writes as if, had they not got the idea for this New Thing, they would have written more of the Old Thing. And again, that makes sense: much nicer to go 'Mmm, I like this thing. Where is more of it? Oh, here it is! Yay!' than 'I will try it and I hope I will like it...' I've seen people on the internet upset about George R.R. Martin's new novella because what they want is a new Song of Ice and Fire book - though wanting the next book in a series is obviously a lovely and flattering thing, and waiting is hard, they do seem very upset. As someone not-crazy-famous, plus a baby author with only one book out, it's not something I have had to address myself, but as someone finishing the third book of her trilogy and thinking about writing other things, it is a Topic of Interest to me! I have thus been scouting the internet looking at people's thoughts on the matter: two writers I know are starting new serieseseses this year, and it is all most interesting. So, any thoughts on awful or excellent movie adaptations you have seen, or excellent ones you would like to see? Any thoughts on the badly behaved characters in fiction? Books you have resented because they are not That Thing You Want? Hit me! Current Mood: busyCurrent Music: when you love someone |

Funny Library Stories
We're working on a de-duplication project at work this semester -- removing most or all duplicate copies to make room for new scholarship. We have a giant stack of printouts from the system telling us what books we have more than one of, and everyone just grabs a page or two per day and pulls books. We get to decide which books we keep -- if we have more than one edition of something, we keep the newer one unless there's historical benefit in the older ones. If they're identical, we keep the less-beat-up one or the one that will last longer (i.e., the hardcover one), or if nothing else, the one with the most interesting dedication in the bookplate. If one of the copies is really old or signed or otherwise very interesting, we give it to Special Collections to see if they want it. It's fun looking through books where we have five or six copies, starting from 100+ years ago...the nicest copies will be the newest one, followed by the oldest one or two. It's generally very clear at what point they invented bad paper! And then you get the really interesting books. One economics book in particular that I found is in reasonably good condition, solid binding, no markings...except this extremely amusing note pencilled into the inside cover: you grade-A shumuck --
where the hell are you? come + get me; I'll be in the Information Booth until about 5; at which time if you haven't shown I'll be on my merry way.
A.
What particularly intrigues me is that the person appears to have written a somewhat longer message at some point previous to this, then erased it to write the one I've quoted. It's hard to tell if this was a previous message or a first draft of this one... I think we're keeping this copy :-) |

In which I uncharacteristically ask for beauty tips
I don't wear makeup. The only times I've done so have been for stage performances and one or two instances of being "made-over" by friends, which were entertaining but ended up with me looking like some alien being from the planet Fashion Magazine. I have absolutely no use for looking "natural", by which the fashion magazines tend to mean "Photoshopped". But there are some occasions -- cons in particular -- where I'd really like to learn the over-the-top style of makeup as costume. This sort of thing, though possibly not quite that sparkly. How does one learn to do that? In a train of thought that should be fairly obvious, has anyone invented very lightweight masquerade-style masks meant to actually attach to glasses? I've occasionally seen ones with oversized eyeholes to accommodate glasses-wearing, but there's such potential in little sprays of feathers or things like that attached like clip-on sunglasses or with removable adhesive. :-) Maybe I can get orawzva to invent one... |

So I got my edits of the copyedited ms in today, one day early. Yay. And I've still got most of the hair in my head. The tracking program wasn't as horrific as I'd feared, though I doubled my comments a couple of times and couldn't figure out how to delete one, and I'd accidentally deleted an editor's comment, which I was. not. supposed. to. do. Oh well, did my best. I thought some might find it interesting to look at a style sheet. It's a document that describes my writing style and names and places to help editors (and me) track inconsistencies. So here's a copy of mine, with all the references purely to book five taken out, so as not to give anything away. ( Style Sheet )d) |

March Cookie!
Today my advance reader's copies arrived, and so tomorrow I will post the Contest Winners! Today, though, it is the tenth, and you all know that means cookie day. 'Sarah,' you may say at this point. 'When you said you were sorry for not posting more we did not expect you to post every day this week.' But so it is! I have now reached the deadline hysteria, and am mad as a March hare: at least it's seasonal. I did not get a consensus from the masses about what people desired as a cookie, but it was pointed out that Nick had not been seen in some time! And since he is my hero, in the sense of... boy who gets the most page time in the trilogy... it seemed right and just to hand over a Nick cookie. So here it is. I hope you like it! Let me know your wishes for the next cookie. ( March Cookie ) Current Mood: hyperCurrent Music: slow dancing in a burning room |

Come see me DANCE for you! Or, the Smart Chicks Tour
So let me speak briefly of author appearances. I like doing them! I like attending them too: I enjoy heckling from the audience. If you are ever at an author signing and you see a tall vaguely Irish lady asking about inappropriate people making out, that is me! Come say hi. But back to me doing them. I love it! Talking about books to people who showed up to see some talking about books? It is obviously awesome. I get very nervous of course, but claiming that it is not awesome would be like saying candy tangerines and rollercoasters are not awesome: patently untrue. My very favourite thing is doing them with other authors. Partly of course this is because I fear people will not show up for just me, and it will be me in the bookshop with the tumbleweeds blowing by. (Occasionally, I would catch a tumbleweed and blow my nose with it.) Mostly it is because there is someone there to say intelligent things, and also I can have fun talking about their books. small snippet of The October Tour With Scott Westerfeld SARAH: Let me tell you who should make out in Scott's books! Wait... let me do an impression! SCOTT: Silence miscreant! Therefore I was very excited when Melissa Marr, aka melissa_writing, came to me and spoke to me sooth. MELISSA: Sarah, you like things that are awesome, yes? SARAH: Melissa, I love things that are awesome. MELISSA: What say you to a group of authors of YA books, from many different publishers but united by awesome, going about the Americas and Canada like a travelling circus of awesome? What would you call that? SARAH: I think I would call it awesome, Melissa. MELISSA: We will call it the Smart Chicks Tour. So, mark your calendars for awesome! (For those not in any of the areas, I will be doing Covenant stuff both sides of the ocean in May, and I have extremely exciting news about this also, but that is for another post.) Here are the dates for all the author appearances. I have copied them all from melissa_writing, for I feel people who read this journal may like to go to feasts of awesome which I cannot attend! My beloved blog, I have neglected you too long! I am sorry, I am writing the Demon's Talisman in a state of uplifted madness, hoping to finish the draft before I am away to the Bologna book fair. Soon I promise you contest winners, book reviews, and Strange Adventures in Foreign Places. For now though, I wish to dazzle you with a beautiful picture! I hope you like it. ( The US cover for the Kiss Me Deadly anthology )The authors in this anthology are, in updated full list: Caitlin Kittredge, Karen Mahoney, Diana Peterfreund, Carrie Ryan, Maggie Stiefvater, Becca Fitzpatrick, Michelle Rowen, Rachel Vincent, Daniel Waters, Daniel Marks, Michelle Zink and Justine Musk. And me. It is out in August. (Edit: I lied! Out July 27th.) The theme is Supernatural Romance, and so I HIGHLY anticipate there being a zombie boyfriend story in it. I also anticipate seeing all the different ways unruly authors can run away in different directions with their stories. In The Eternal Kiss, also edited by the lovely Trisha Telep, very few vampires involved remained unharmed. (I have heard it referred to as the Screw You, Vampires! anthology). But people seem to enjoy it! I enjoyed writing my boyband vampires story, I know that. My story in Kiss Me Deadly is called The Spy Who Never Grew Up, and it is about Peter Pan in a tux with a dead leaf as a bowtie, the Queen of England, and the captain of a crack team of killer fairies called Ninja Star. My editor, who said 'How about fairy romance?' may come for me at any moment. In which case - livejournal, avenge my death! Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: so contagious |
